There were a lot of winners in Atlantic City
April 17th and 18th. They were the attendees and exhibitors at New Jersey NENA’s
Spring Conference at the Tropicana Hotel. In spite of a record rainfall and
flooding throughout the state, over 250 Public Safety Communications Managers,
Supervisors, Telecommunicators and Suppliers of 9-1-1 equipment and services
were able to participate in this year’s conference.
The conference featured educational sessions on new technologies and operations.
Tuesday’s sessions began with presentations by representatives of the Gold
Level Sponsors, Kova Corporation, KML Technology, Plant-CML and Verizon. Robert
Gojanovich of HBF provided an informative session on Next Generation 9-1-1.
There were two presentations concerning missing children programs by Mr. Bob
Hoover of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Chief
Marlin Price from the A Child is Missing organization. Other sessions provided
information about PSAP Accreditation, the TERT initiative and the Telephone
Priority Service program. The day concluded with a report by Craig Reiner, the
State 9-1-1 Director, on the status of 9-1-1 in New Jersey and the initiatives
underway in the areas of wireless, VoIP, PSAP Consolidation, public education,
and Telecommunicator training. Wednesday started with a presentation by Mike
Fischell of L. Robert Kimball on PSAP Consolidation. Al McNally of MICCOM
con-ducted two sessions, one on training programs and the other on developing
policy and procedure manuals. Chuck Mars, OETS Coordinator, conducted a program
on the ins and outs of handling calls using Hearing Carry Over (HCO) and Voice
Carry Over (VCO). The two-day program was approved by the Office of Emergency
Telecommunications Services for 8 hours of Continuing Telecommunications
Education Credit.
A highlight of Wednesday’s program was the Chapter Meeting and 9-1-1 Hero
awards. Chapter President Anthony Kozlowski called the membership to action and
asked for the formation of an executive sub-committee to review recent
legislation mandating PSAP consolidation. He found it troubling that this
legislation was put through with no input from NJ NENA or the 9-1-1 community.
Following the business meeting, plaques were presented to the immediate past
president, Michael Grennier and to Robert Gojanovich who was a charter member of
the chapter and served as Commercial Vice President since the chapter’s
formation. Mike retired from public safety service last year and in accor-dance
with the chapter by-laws resigned from his position as president. Bob changed
jobs last years taking a position with HBF. Since he no longer worked or lived
in New Jersey, he had to resign his position in the chapter.
Following the chapter meeting, the State 9-1-1 heroes were honored. This year’s
honorees were all telecommunicators. From Plainsboro, Katie Ryan was honored
for her expert handling of a call involving a gunshot victim; from North West
Bergen Central Dispatch Kevin Scarpa was recognized his tenacity in locating a
cellular 9-1-1 caller. The Old Bridge Police 9-1-1 center had three honorees for
their professionalism in handling emergency medical calls - Michael Matlosz for
providing adult choking instruction; Libby Flynn for providing infant CPR
instructions; and, Mary Anne Mateyka for providing adult CPR instructions.
In addition to all the informative educational
sessions, there were plenty of opportunities to visit the exhibit booths to see
the latest technological and operational offerings. Each day attendees were
provided with a continental breakfast, coffee break and luncheon in the exhibit
area. Tuesday evening the chapter hosted a reception at Carmine’s restaurant in
the hotel for all those attending both days. This offered an additional chance
to net-work with peers and exhibitors. The reception was a great success thanks
to the sponsors and exhibitors whose financial support made it possible.
No conference would be a success with out the help of volunteers. The Executive
Board of NJ NENA would like to extend special thanks to Debbie O’Neill and Patty
Burd who staffed the registration desk and efficiently assisted the largest
number of attendees in chapter history; Danny Medina, for filling in wherever
needed assisting with both the exhibitors and the attendees, and thanks for all
the photos goes to Linda O’Neill for serving as the event photographer.
